Posturefit Studio

Posturefit was founded by Michelle Owen, New Zealand’s most knowledgeable structural and postural health expert.

She has created a space where athletes, busy executives, gym-goers, and those seeking a greater sense of wellness can get highly specialised support, training, and motivation.

Our Approach

Most people don’t consider posture when it comes to understanding pain, injury or sub-optimal performance.

Posturefit view the body as a whole, and understand how interrelated parts of your body impact on another’s function.

We take the time to first assess postural imbalances and fascia distortion, then create completely personalised postural correction plans that re-educate your structure.

Our Customer Reviews

I had been experiencing lower back pain for several years and tried all sorts of things from a personal trainer through to acupuncture. It took the very first visit with Michelle at Posturefit Studios to see why this was and to also release this pain I had been carrying. Several sessions later and I had the know how to never feel the pain I had been living with for long.

Michael Macleod

After living with a life-changing back injury for many years. I had tried just about everything with no real change or improvements. A friend told me about Posturefit and ever since starting there it has been a very friendly positive experience with very noticeable improvement. I feel very lucky to have found them.

I can’t recommend them enough.

Glen Jones

Going to Posturefit Studio for private lessons and group classes has been THE most effective treatment for my pain, immobility, and physical dysfunction. I am now in my 50’s and stronger and fitter than I have ever been. I see people everywhere moving around, uncomfortable in their pain and restriction and I want to run up and tell them to go to Posturefit!

Frequently Asked Questions

Postural correction is a specialised modality, and as we’re one of only a few postural correction studios in New Zealand, it’s likely that you may not have come across support like this before. When we meet with new clients, we’re often asked the same questions. So, we thought we’d cover off some of our key points of difference for those who may be curious about how our postural assessments and specialised training programmes can help.

Who is postural correction for?

You may be an athlete or active gym goer. Or you may be a business executive or someone recovering from injury or on-going pain. Whatever your situation, postural correction can help with physical performance and strength, and optimise the way you feel both physically and mentally.

How do I know if I need a postural assessment?

Many of the clients who come to see us are experiencing pain, have chronic concerns or want to improve their physical performance. It’s a perception that it is only sedentary people that need to correct their posture or structure. In fact almost everyone could stand to improve their position (posture). Here are some reasons that may suggest it would be a good idea to come and see us:

  • You have on-going pain, discomfort, weakness, tight muscles, or feel imbalance
  • You have tried everything to solve your pain or problem, without sustained relief
  • You have recurring injuries that affect your day-to-day life
  • You are aware that you slouch, slump or hunch when sitting or standing
  • You have been told you need surgery to correct joint or body problems
  • You have recently had surgery
  • You’re an athlete who would like to up-level your performance
  • You experience pain or recurring injuries that affect your ability to play sport or exercise
  • You’d like to feel more ease and freedom to do things like play with your children or grandchildren
  • You’re in a busy corporate job and would like to train more effectively
  • You want to maintain function and ease as you age.

What makes a postural or structural based practitioner different from other wellbeing practitioners?

You may have already been to a masseuse, a physiotherapist, a chiropractor, an acupuncturist, and while all of these specialists are great at their area of expertise, it’s likely they may not be the right people to help rebuild your body over the long term – that’s where a postural specialist comes in. Also, all of these modalities are passive meaning someone is doing them to you. Instead, the work we do at Posturefit is active; you are doing the work (skilled exercise) and we are teaching you.

What is involved in a postural assessment?

The Postural Assessment is a detailed series of tests and measurements, designed to identify your individual issues – and find ways to solve them. The process takes around 90 mins. Because the assessment is so thorough, it helps us look at the whole picture when it comes to your structural health and wellbeing, and identify the causes of any pain or posture issues. First, we will use a postural grid to look at any body distortions that could be causing pain or discomfort. The next step is a series of muscle length and tension tests, designed to identify any fascia, muscles and joints that need stretching or strengthening. Your spinal curvature and pelvic angles are measured to get a clear picture of your static posture and holding patterns, and movement patterns are also assessed. The assessment includes a detailed discussion of any pain or physical problems, previous treatments, your exercise regime, sports, general health, and anything else that may be affecting your wellbeing.

Why is correct posture so important?

Pain or injury isn’t always caused by a significant accident; often it’s as a result of long-term poor posture and movement patterns. How we hold ourselves and our ability to move well every day is key to being pain-free and having healthy tissue, joints and nervous system. Correcting our body position helps prevent pain and injury from occurring, or from holding us back from performing at our best.

What kind of issues will postural correction help me with?

Common reasons that someone may come and see us include: back, neck or shoulder pain, scoliosis, disc herniations, sciatica, tight hips or hamstrings, painful joints, muscles or tendons, weak core muscles, chronic pain, digestive, circulation or immunity issues, low energy and fatigue.

What happens after the postural assessment?

After your postural assessment, we’ll create a personalised training and coaching programme that is designed around your specific challenges. This programme will involve one-to-one guided training sessions where we’ll take you through highly specific exercises, calling on techniques such as myofascial stretching, ELDOA spinal decompression postures, global postural stretching and strength training.

What is involved with training sessions?

Your coach will guide you through corrective exercises to resolve imbalances and create a new postural position. The goal is to create new neural pathways that realign and teach your body to maintain optimal joint positions. Essentially, we are teaching you to reorganise and tidy the internal support of your body, strengthening you from the inside out.

How long do we need to work together?

As everyone’s challenges and situations are different, so too is their training plan. It also depends on how much you want to learn. We encourage a minimum of 10 sessions, however working together long-term is when you’ll really see results. You can liken it to learning a language – we all have different skill levels, different goals and a different commitment to training. Some are just looking for the basics to get by, while others want and need a deeper level of learning. We have clients who come to us to correct posture after years stuck at a desk, while many others are high-performance athletes who want to completely optimise their physical strength.

When will I begin to see improvements?

Again, as each individual is different, this will depend on the level of dysfunction in your body, your commitment to training, your overall lifestyle choices and how well you are able to integrate change into other areas of your life. You can experience rapid improvement if you closely follow the prescribed programme and make efforts to put in the necessary work outside of our training sessions. You will begin to feel your body becoming freer. It will be easier to maintain proper alignment, and pain, tightness and discomfort will reduce over time.

Can I train without your help?

After your assessment, we recommend that initially you train with us twice a week. It’s up to you, however, how much training you’d like to do on your own. We understand that time and budget restraints may be a factor, and clients may choose to taper their sessions to one a week, or less over time. We’ll recommend a programme that is right for helping you achieve your goals.

How are you different from a normal personal trainer?

The Posturefit Studio is a hub of experienced, highly specialised practitioners, including C.H.E.K (Corrective High performance Exercise Kinesiologists) and C.H.E.K Holistic Lifestyle Coaches, Certified ELDOA and Myofascial stretching, Soma training, functional range conditioning (FRC), kin stretch structural integration, and MyoFascial therapists. As C.H.E.K practitioners, we specialise in isolating the areas where you most need coaching, correction, stabilisation or specific conditioning.

Unlike other training studios who focus on how things look on the outside, we focus on correcting the inner workings of the body first. In doing so, we help you overcome on-going injuries, chronic pain, and low energy, and ensure you instead find freedom in your body so you can achieve your full physical and functional potential.

Do you work in collaboration with other practitioners?

Yes, we work in collaboration with many amazing practitioners to help you get your desired results. Just like when you are building a home, you call on a range of experts – the electrician, the plumber, the blocklayer – but without someone overseeing and managing the whole project and putting their parts into context, the work these people do just won’t get the best result. Imagine the result if you tried to build your house using only an electrician, for example! We can provide recommendations for other practitioners or specialists who we believe can help you achieve your goals.

What is ELDOA?

Developed by world-renowned French osteopath, Guy Voyer, ELDOA is an exercise technique that creates tension in the connective tissue in the body (known as fascia). Through precise postures, we work to decompress the spine at any level, create space around any joint and re-balance your body

What is myofascial stretching?

Myofascial stretches put tension into the fascia that encase your muscles. This improves the quality of the fascia, giving you space and balance in the body while correcting structural imbalances and releasing the tension across joints that can lead to inflammation and pain.

What is Global Postural Stretching?

Your body is not only made up of muscles, bones, joints, nervous system and organs – all these parts are also linked with fascia. Therefore, GPS is a form of precise exercise therapy that organises and integrates fascia in the body by focusing on the joints, muscle and connective tissue, resulting in reduced pain and improved sports performance.

What is Soma training?

Soma training works segmentally, integrating precise exercise techniques, ranging from analytical and segmental training to proprioception, myofascial stretching, ELDOA and global postural stretching. The specific application of these techniques can help with injury recovery and prevention, greater strength, improved physical performance and postural correction.

What is C.H.E.K?

C.H.E.K stands for Corrective High-performance Exercise Kinesiology. The C.H.E.K Institute was founded by Paul Chek, a world-renowned expert in the fields of corrective and high-performance exercise kinesiology, and holistic wellness. C.H.E.K Practitioners are specialists in corrective exercise kinesiology which will support you in achieving a strong and structurally correct posture.

What is functional range conditioning (FRC) and Kin Stretch?

FRC and Kin Stretch are comprehensive joint training systems developed by Dr Andreo Spina, originally a Doctor of chiropractic and a world renowned musculoskeletal expert. These approaches focus on physical conditioning for body control, injury prevention, joint health and physical longevity by improving range of motion across your joints through increasing the joint tissue’s ability to absorb load.

Do you offer group classes?

Yes, we offer stretch and strength classes at our studio to help you improve flexibility and physical performance through highly specialised techniques. These classes call on ELDOA, myofascial stretching, global postural stretching, Soma training, functional range conditioning and Kin stretch. Bookings are essential.
